Support FAQs

How accurate is Instant Blood Pressure?

We are continually working to improve the accuracy of Instant Blood Pressure. The performance characteristics of our app are listed in the chart below. These characteristics are developed through an in-house study using the ANSI/AAMI/ISO 81060-2:2013 protocol modified to compare Instant Blood Pressure to upper-arm, oscillometric blood pressure cuff devices. The results of this study find that Instant Blood Pressure does not yet meet the performance standards set forth by the ANSI/AAMI/ISO 81060-2:2013 protocol and, for this reason, it provides an estimate of blood pressure only. Furthermore, traditional automated upper-arm blood pressure monitors are currently more accurate and provide blood pressure readings over a greater range than Instant Blood Pressure.

† Instant Blood Pressure will not produce an estimate outside of its supported range. Do not attempt to use Instant Blood Pressure to produce a reading outside of its range. If you know your blood pressure or pulse rate to fall outside of this range or if you intend to estimate blood pressure or pulse rate outside of this range, Instant Blood Pressure is not suitable for your use; please inquire with customer support (support@instantbloodpressure.com) about any refund.

* Mean = mean difference compared to reference, SD = standard deviation of difference. RMSD = root mean squared deviation. Pearson = Pearson correlation coefficient with reference. This accuracy characteristic is representative of the supported range only. Accuracy performance may be poor outside of the supported range.

caution: Important Safety & USE Information

Use Instant Blood Pressure to estimate blood pressure and pulse rate immediately before, during, or after a recreational activity.

For example, Instant Blood Pressure may be used to estimate cool-down and recovery from cardiovascular exercise or estimate the impact of a meditation session or breathing exercise on pulse rate and blood pressure. Instant Blood Pressure is intended to be used by adults 18 years of age or older and it has not been tested for use on children or pregnant women.

Do not rely on Instant Blood Pressure for medical advice or diagnosis.

Instant Blood Pressure is intended for recreational use only. It is not a replacement or substitute for a cuff or other blood pressure monitor. Instant Blood Pressure’s performance and accuracy characteristics do not meet international standards for a blood pressure monitor intended for clinical use.

Do not use Instant Blood Pressure as a replacement or substitute for a cuff or other blood pressure monitor. It is not as accurate as a cuff or other monitor.

Blood pressure cuffs and other blood pressure monitors are medical devices intended for clinical use. Instant Blood Pressure is intended for recreational use only. Blood pressure cuffs and other blood pressure monitors are currently more accurate than Instant Blood Pressure and provide a wider range of measurement. Instant Blood Pressure provides an estimate of blood pressure only.

Instant Blood Pressure is not suitable for use by individuals whose Systolic or Diastolic blood pressure is outside our supported range of 83-178 (mmHg) or 58-107 (mmHg), respectively.

Instant Blood Pressure will not produce estimates outside of its supported range of 83-178mmHg for Systolic blood pressure and 58-107mmHg for Diastolic blood pressure. Some people may have blood pressures that are outside of this supported range.

Consult your doctor if you have any health concern. Do not self-adjust medications.

Take medications as prescribed by your doctor. Only a doctor is qualified to diagnose and treat disease such as hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure). Self-diagnosis and self-treatment may lead to deterioration of your health.

Do not use Instant Blood Pressure if you wear a pacemaker or any internal electronic medical device.

Use of a cell phone in close proximity to a pacemaker or other internal electronic medical device can interfere with its normal operation.

Is Instant Blood Pressure a medical device?

No. Instant Blood Pressure is not a medical device. It is for recreational use only. It is not a replacement for a medical-grade blood pressure monitor. It is not intended for use in and should not be used for the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. Do not use Instant Blood Pressure to diagnose, mitigate, treat, or prevent hypertension or hypotension. Consult a doctor if you have any health concern.

Tips For Taking A Successful Measurement

  • Take a seat in a chair with your feet flat on the floor.

  • Ensure you are wearing only a thin-material top (remove any jacket, sweater, or extra outer layers).

  • Remove any case from your device so that it may not interfere with your measurement.

  • Support the weight of the phone with your left hand. Only hold the phone with your left hand during measurements so that you don't accidentally restrict blood flow to your right finger.

  • Do not cut off blood circulation to your finger by pressing too hard with your finger over the camera lens.

  • Be still during your measurement.

  • Remain quiet during your measurement.

  • Place the phone against the proper location on your chest. For females, place the flat, bottom edge of your phone in direct contact with your chest above your left breast. For males, place the flat, bottom edge of your phone in direct contact with your chest below your left pectoral muscle.

  • Press the phone into your chest with light, steady pressure.

  • Press the phone into your chest with light, steady pressure while keeping your right finger over the camera lens.

Does it provide a history of my readings?

Currently, the app does not provide a history of readings. We are in the process of developing new features in the blood pressure app to improve the user experience.

SHOULD I USE INSTANT BLOOD PRESSURE IF I wear A PACEMAKER?

No, you should not use Instant Blood Pressure if you wear a pacemaker or any other internal electronic medical device. Cell phone usage in close proximity to a pacemaker or other internal electronic medical device can interfere with its normal operations.

I get a server error when trying to submit my body profile form. What do I do?

Please ensure that your iPhone's language settings are set to English and try again. If you still receive a server error please let us know at support@instantbloodpressure.com. While other languages are not supported at this time, we do hope to expand our language support.

I'm a physician. How can I learn more?

We'd be delighted to hear from you. You may contact us at support@instantbloodpressure.com. Be sure to mention you are a physician. We will do our best to address your inquiry as quickly as possible and appreciate your patience in any response. Due to the level of inquiries we receive, we may not be able to respond.

Also, please note that Instant Blood Pressure is not for medical use. It should not be used in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. Instant Blood Pressure is not as accurate as an automated, oscillometric blood pressure cuff; nor does it provide as wide a range of blood pressure measurement. For these reasons, Instant Blood Pressure provides an estimate of systolic and diastolic blood pressure only.

I'm a female. What if I'm wearing a bra?

That's okay. Just make sure you stay clear of your bra material and wire when placing the phone to your chest. Only your thin top/shirt should be between your iPhone and chest at the site of placement.

Is it really necessary to enter my height, weight, age, and sex to use Instant Blood Pressure?

Yes. This information is used to improve the accuracy of the results. If you choose not to provide this information accurately, then the accuracy of your blood pressure approximation may be affected.
